Ben and I ventured into the water and took in the sights. Ben was much braver in this water. It was very shallow, and the surf was calm. I pulled him around the shore and we snorkeled. It was fantastic! The occasional giggle would echo through his snorkel whenever he saw a fish swim between my feet. He relaxed and let himself be carried by the surf. He stayed in until the goosebumps were too much and he required some Hawaii sun to warm back up. Then he went back in again!

This beach was great. It's at the bottom of the Ritz-Carlton complex, so it's fancy schmancy. And, there was some interesting people watching. A woman got into the water, put on her mask, snorkel and fins, swam out a bit, came back to shore and gave her companion her gum and told him to hold onto it for her. Crazy.
On the plus side, the fishies swam right between your feet and there were tons to see underwater, too.

After leaving this stunning beach, we stumbled upon a fantastic art gallery in Lahaina, listened to traditional Hawaiian music and had a yummy plate lunch, complete with pupus (and freakin' good coconut custard).
The rest of the afternoon was spent in the pool, and watching the sunset.

This could explain the sunburn on the back of my knees. Travis and I took turns snorkeling in the cove. We both saw numerous kinds of fishies, some small and some, um, a little bigger. Remember my pufferfish friend from the aquarium? He was down there. I kept remembering how he bit at the diverman (Ry's terminology) in the tank. I didn't get too close.
Travis saw something even scarier on his turn - an eel! Ick! He swam pretty quickly back to shore. I could tell he'd seen something scary and was glad to have not shared that experience.

Ry said, "If Mama wants to go to Hana again, she can go by herself." Beach it was. We were there by 8. It's a beautiful spot.
The first picture of Ben is after he spent some time snorkeling. There are no pictures of this. I was holding on to him to make sure he doesn't float away (his big fear), and Travis was holding onto Ry to keep him from running wildly into the ocean, into rocks or into people. We'll try to get some pictures tomorrow. He did really well, but got cold. As he likes to remind me, it's because he's so skinny.
Ry was pretty happy to play in the sand, tidepool, wander and explore.

The pictures are lacking in clarity, but they were obtained with great excitement. There's a herd? colony? tribe? of turtles in the waters in front of the condo. I suppose they are offshore in front of most condos and resorts in front of Maui. Nonetheless, it's exhilarating to spot one. They only poke their heads up for a second, and you don't know where they will pop up next. I finally just focused on one spot for a while and snapped away. They are amazing creatures.
